The aim of EDL Foundation is to provide cross-domain access to Europe's cultural heritage.
The Foundation will therefore:
- facilitate formal agreement across museums, archives, audio-visual archives and libraries on how to cooperate in the delivery and sustainability of a joint portal.
- provide a legal framework for use by the EU for funding purposes and as a springboard for future governance.
Ministries are welcome to join the EDL Foundation as Associate Participants
This enables their representatives to attend meetings and participate in the Foundation’s activities. Associate Participants do not have voting rights in the Foundation.
Advantages of participation
- Europeana’s primary purpose is to link users direct to digitised heritage content from all Europe’s member states
- It aims to make heritage content accessible in a Web 2.0 environment
- It’s a prestigious project involving Europe’s greatest memory institutions
- It will expose national content to new audiences and all levels of learning
- This will extend the knowledge and understanding of each nation’s heritage
- The network is developing leading-edge technical solutions
- Europeana will inspire and promote creative enterprise
- It aims to foster a wider, more cohesive sense of European identity
Strategic priorities for Ministries
- Support national portals for museums, audio-visual collections, libraries and archives. National portals establish consistent standards for digitised content, enabling Europeana to harvest heritage media of different types.
- Support the development of digitisation programmes to bring priority national collections into Europeana.
